The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a new Statutory Holiday announced by the Liberal government in 2021 to recognize our Indigenous neighbours. It is intended to be a day of reflection on the troubled past and participation in events or taking time to research on our own the history and culture of the Indigenous peoples. A day of peace and reflection.
However, the focus instead seems to be on the fact that this is a “paid Statutory Holiday” for federal workers only. Provincially-regulated workers in Canada will not be entitled to the day off with pay. In addition, the holiday falls on the last day of the month (Sept 30th) which means Canada Post, Banks, Airlines and other Federal Services will all be closed that day too, potentially causing serious disruptions with monthly payments (OAS, CPP) and access to services.
